GAITHERSBURG, MD: It’s been a month since the government shutdown began. After 40 days, senators finally reached a bipartisan agreement on a stopgap funding bill to keep the government funded through January 30, 2026. The bill also funds military construction, veterans’ affairs, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Drug (FDA), and the Legislative Branch through September 30, 2026. It shouldn’t have taken 40 days for the Senate to advance the proposal to end the government shutdown, especially when every day of delay has come at the expense of the American people, including constituents in Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District. Today marks day 41 of the government shutdown, and the Senate passed the bill.
Chris Burnett, candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in Maryland's 6th Congressional District stated: “The Senate passed the stopgap funding bill, and the House of Representatives must act immediately to prevent my constituents from suffering any further from this government shutdown. The problem in Washington is a lack of accountability and transparency in the budget process, and I intend to bring both back to Congress. I have long advocated for reducing Members of Congress’ salaries during a government shutdown and withholding their pay until a budget is approved. Additionally, Congress shouldn’t adjourn for weeks at a time, as doing so only increases the risk of ending up back in the same situation we face now. Lawmakers need to stay in Washington until a budget is passed.”
Chris Burnett is a retired Marine Corps officer and national security lawyer running for
Congress in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.
