GAITHERSBURG, MD: It’s been over a month since the government shutdown began. After 43 days, the pain and hardship endured by the American people, including constituents in Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District, has finally come to an end. The House of Representatives passed a funding package to reopen the government and keep it funded through January 30 by a vote of 222-209. Unfortunately, Representative April McClain Delany (D-MD-6) opposed the bill, despite repeatedly claiming she wanted to end the shutdown. Since the shutdown began, she has refused to negotiate on the ACA tax credits.
Instead of working toward a bipartisan solution, Representative McClain Delany supported a partisan Democratic proposal that would repeal the suspension of Obamacare funding for most non-citizens and the Obamacare “Special Rules” for immigrants that were enacted under the One Big Beautiful Act (Public Law No: 119- 21), among other provisions. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), repealing these two provisions would cost $118.7 billion and increase federal deficits over the 2026- 2035 period.
Representative McClain Delany’s refusal to reopen the government shows she is putting politics ahead of the people she represents, rather than working with Republicans to lower healthcare premiums in Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District.
If elected to Congress, I would vote to reopen the government and work across the aisle to reduce healthcare costs for Marylanders in the Sixth District. That’s the kind of leadership our community deserves.
