GAITHERSBURG, MD: The House of Representatives passed the District of Columbia Cash Bail Reform Act of 2025 by a vote of 237 to 179. The legislation strengthens the D.C. criminal code by reinstating cash bail requirements and ensuring that individuals charged with violent crimes are detained while awaiting trial.
“Today’s vote is a step toward restoring public safety and accountability. The District has seen the consequences of lax policies that let dangerous offenders walk free” said Burnett. “Requiring cash bail and detaining violent criminals until their day in court is simple common sense."
Despite broad bipartisan support, Representative April McClain Delaney opposed the bill.
“It is troubling that Representative McClain Delaney voted against a measure designed to protect families across our region,” Burnett said. “Voters deserve to know why she refuses to support tougher action that gets violent criminals off our streets.”
