GAITHERSBURG, MD: President Trump signed an executive order (EO) to

safeguard American artificial intelligence (AI) innovation from an inconsistent

and expensive compliance burden created by varying State laws. The EO

promotes a single, minimal “burdensome national standard,” instead of 50

conflicting ones. Additionally, Federal agencies must assess their discretionary

grant programs to determine if they can make funding contingent on States

avoiding the enactment of conflicting AI laws or committing not to enforce such laws while receiving Federal funds.

“America needs clear, well-defined, unambiguous regulations to protect its

citizens, their information, and their privacy," said Burnett. "Simultaneously, we

must foster an environment that allows us to compete in a fiercely competitive

international technology landscape. Fragmented or conflicting regulatory

frameworks both weaken protections and stifle innovation. Losing this global

competition is not an option."
